Appearance: colourless or light yellow liquid at room temperature, slightly phenolic odour.
Solubility: insoluble in water, but soluble in organic solvents such as acetone, ethanol, trichloromethane.
Physical properties: freezing point 1ºC, boiling point 298~303ºC, relative density 0.953 (20ºC).NP is quite stable at room temperature, not easily oxidised, and does not corrode carbon steel, copper, zinc, aluminium and other metals.

Molecular weight: 220
Structure: the structure of nonylphenol is usually in the phenol on the right position to a nonyl group, the chemical formula is C9H19C6H4OH.
Isomerism: Due to the different substituent structures and substitution positions, there may be more than one hundred kinds of isomers of nonylphenol.
Application fields
Nonylphenol has excellent decontamination, wetting, penetration, dispersion, solubilisation and emulsification properties, so it is widely used in many fields:

Surfactants: nonylphenol is an important raw material for the production of nonionic surfactants, such as nonylphenol polyoxyethylene ether (NPE).
Pesticides: Used as pesticide emulsifier.
Detergents: These are used in daily detergents, such as washing powder and detergent.
Textile industry: used as textile dyestuff auxiliaries, as well as detergents for worsted and coarse spinning tweeds.
Paper industry: used as washing and dispersing agent.
Lubricating oil: used as an additive.
Resin and rubber are used as resin modifiers and rubber stabilisers.
