Uses
Paraxylene is mainly used in the production of purified terephthalic acid (PTA) or dimethyl terephthalate (DMT), while PTA or DMT can be reacted with ethylene glycol to form polyethylene terephthalate (PET), or polyester. Polyester is an important raw material for the production of polyester fibres, polyester bottles, polyester films and plastic alloys. In addition, paraxylene can be used as a solvent and raw material for the production of pharmaceuticals, spices, resins, paints, dyes and pesticides.
Production process and raw materials
Production process: At present, the typical international PX production process mainly includes the production process developed by the UOP Company of the United States and the IFP of France. Domestic Sinopec has also overcome the difficulties in the whole process of PX and become one of the main PX technology patentees.
Raw material: The raw material of paraxylene is mainly mixed xylene (MX), which is composed of paraxylene, o-xylene and m-xylene, while MX mainly comes from catalytic reforming of naphtha or C6+ reforming of refinery to produce oil. In addition, benzene, toluene and other aromatic hydrocarbons can generate paraxylene through alkylation reaction and disproportionation reaction.
IV. Supply and Demand
Global supply and demand: Asia is the centre of global PX supply and demand, but the imbalance between supply and demand among Asian regions is prominent. China is the world's largest PX demand country, but there is a huge supply gap, while Northeast Asia (e.g. Japan, South Korea) has a large overcapacity.
Supply and demand in China: In recent years, China's PX production capacity has grown rapidly, but it still cannot meet downstream demand and requires large imports every year. However, with the commissioning and completion of a number of large private refining projects in China, there has been a significant decline in PX import dependence.
