Main components: Tall oil is mainly composed of fatty acids and rosinic acid. The fatty acid portion consists mainly of oleic and linoleic acids, while rosinic acid is a diterpene carboxylic acid. In addition, Tall oil also contains a small amount of unsaponifiable substances (such as steroids, etc.).
Physical Properties: Tall oil is a dark black oily liquid with a specific odour. Its boiling point is 360.85ºC (under 101325Pa), density is 0.95~1.0g/cm³, vapour pressure is 0.004Pa (under 25ºC). Water solubility is 42.2mg/L (under 20ºC), surface tension is 66.7mN/m (under specific conditions).
Second, production and fractionation process
The production and fractionation process of Tall oil mainly includes the following steps:
Recovery of pulp black liquor soap: Recover pulp waste liquid from alkaline wood pulp process, after static stratification, scrape the upper layer of fatty acid sodium soap and sodium turpentine soap to get crude Torr soap.
Acidification of black liquid soap system of crude Tolle oil: the crude Tolle soap washing, acidification and refining stratification, the upper layer is crude Tolle oil.
Refining of Tall Oil: Through the method of distillation under reduced pressure, distilled Tall Oil (also called floating rosin) can be further separated, which consists of a large number of rosin acid and a small amount of fatty acids.
Third, the main use
Tall oil has a wide range of applications, mainly including:
Soaps and detergents: The fatty acid portion of Tall oil can be used in the manufacture of soaps and detergents.
Coatings and paints: Tall oil and its derivatives can be used in the manufacture of varnishes, paints, inks and other coating products.
Metalworking fluids: Tall oil is commonly used as a co-emulsifier, rust inhibitor and lubricant in metalworking fluids. It can improve the emulsification effect, reduce friction and wear, and has certain anti-foaming effect and anti-rust performance.
Rubber industry: oxidatively modified essential Tall oil is an excellent softener for rubber regeneration, which can make the produced regenerated rubber smooth, soft, and has a certain viscosity, plasticity and strength.
Other applications: Tall oil can also be used in the manufacture of flotation agents, ore flotation agent, adhesive, disinfectant, etc., and in the paper industry as pulp, paint and moisture-proof paper adhesives.
