Alias: 1,2-Propanediol-1-monobutyl ether; 2-Butoxy-1-propanol; 2-Hydroxypropyl-butyl ether; Propylene Glycol Monobutyl Ether (PNB)
II. Physical Properties
Appearance: transparent, colourless or slightly yellow liquid with a slight etheric odour.
Boiling point: 171°C (also mentioned as 171.1°C in some sources)
Melting point: -90°C
Flash point: 60°C (open cup flash point may be 71°C)

Surface tension: 26.5 mPa-s (29 mN/m has also been mentioned, which may vary depending on test conditions)
Solubility: partially soluble in water (6.0% solubility at 25°C), also soluble in a variety of organic and inorganic substances, including grease, resins, pigments and some inorganic salts.
Chemical Properties
Stability: chemically stable, not easy to decompose.
Reactivity: it can participate in etherification reaction and other chemical reactions.
Fourth, the main use
Coating industry: as a highly efficient solvent, it can effectively dissolve various resins and pigments, and improve the uniformity and levelling of coatings. Its evaporation speed is moderate, which helps to control the drying time of the paint and improve the construction efficiency.
Cleaning agent: It can dissolve grease, wax and other difficult-to-remove stains, and is widely used in industrial equipment cleaning, household cleaning and personal care products.
Inks and Printing Media: As a solvent, it can effectively regulate the viscosity and fluidity of inks to ensure the stability and uniformity of inks during the printing process. Its low volatility helps reduce volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions and meets environmental requirements.
Agricultural chemicals: Used as an emulsifier and solvent in the formulation of pesticides and herbicides to improve efficacy and ensure uniform distribution of the agent.
V. Production Methods
Main method: Prepared by etherification reaction of propylene glycol and n-butanol. Under the action of acid catalyst (such as sulfuric acid or sulfonic acid resin), propylene glycol and n-butanol react at high temperature to form propylene glycol butyl ether and water. The reaction is usually carried out at temperatures in the range of 150 to 200°C. In order to improve the purity of propylene glycol butyl ether, azeotropic distillation is often used for separation.
Environmentally friendly process: With the improvement of environmental protection requirements, synthesis methods using acid-free catalysts (e.g., solid acid catalysts) are gradually being applied to reduce waste acid emission and pollution to the environment.
