Physical Properties
Appearance: Pure oleic acid is colourless or light yellow transparent oily liquid, industrial products may appear yellow to red.
Melting point: about 13.4°C.
Boiling point: between 350~360°C.
Density: Relative density is about 0.8935 (20/4°C), or specific gravity 0.8905.
Solubility: insoluble in water, but soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol, petrol.
III. Existence and Extraction
Existence: Vegetable oleic acid mainly exists in various vegetable oils, such as olive oil, linseed oil, soybean oil, rapeseed oil, peanut oil, camellia oil, sea buckthorn oil, almond oil, etc., of which olive oil has the highest content of vegetable oleic acid, which reaches more than 75%. In addition, nuts, seeds, poultry, fish, etc. also contain a certain amount of vegetable oleic acid.
Extraction: Free oleic acid as well as other fatty acids can be obtained by hydrolysis (e.g. saponification reaction) of these vegetable oils. Further through distillation and other purification processes, can be separated from the mixture of fatty acids in a higher purity of vegetable oleic acid.
Chemical Properties
Basic properties: vegetable oleic acid has the basic chemical properties of organic carboxylic acid.
Specific properties: it has specific chemical properties due to its unsaturated double bond, for example, it can be converted into stearic acid (saturated fatty acid) by hydrogenation reaction. Its double bond also has a trans isomer, trans-oleic acid.
V. Applications
Plastic plasticiser: used to improve the flexibility, ductility and processing performance of plastic materials.
Engineering plastics and synthetic fibres: used as raw materials or modifiers for the manufacture of plastic products and fibre materials with specific properties, such as nylon 8 and 9.
Synthetic Detergents & Surfactants: used as an active ingredient in detergent formulations to help remove stains; also used in the production of various types of surfactants such as oleic acid soaps.
Paints & Coatings: Used as raw materials or additives in the manufacture of paints, inks, varnishes and other coating products, affecting the gloss, levelling, adhesion and other properties of coatings.
Other applications: It is also used in textile oils, wood preservatives, crude oil recovery additives, emulsion breakers, mineral flotation agents, amide products, biros oils, copy paper, waxed paper, lubricants, metal cutting fluids and many other fields. In addition, in the field of medicine, vegetable oleic acid can be used as an excipient of drug preparation, which helps to improve the stability and solubility of the drug; in the manufacture of cosmetics, it can improve the texture and moisturising performance of cosmetics; in food processing, it is used as a food additive, which acts as an emulsifier and stabilizer.
