Physical Properties
Properties: colourless stable liquid, mild odour, slight smell.
Solubility: slightly soluble in water, miscible with hydrocarbons, oils and fats. It can dissolve cellulose nitrate, cellulose acetate, natural resin and synthetic resin etc. It dissolves 4.0% in water at 20ºC and 3.4% at 25ºC.
Other physical properties: viscosity (mPa-s, 20 ºC) is 3.58, vapour pressure (kPa, 75 ºC) is 1.33, the heat of evaporation (KJ/kg, 20 ºC) is 324.0.
Third, chemical properties
Hydrolysis reaction: Hydrolysis reaction can occur in the presence of acid and alkali, but does not absorb water.
Oxidation reaction: It is gradually oxidised to pyruvic acid when air is passed at 180°C for a long time.
Hydrogenation reaction: When hydrogenated at 225ºC and 15~20MPa in the presence of copper-chromium catalyst, propylene glycol is generated.
Reaction with ammonia: Lactic acid amide and butanol are formed by reaction with ammonia.
Other reactions: the alcohol hydroxyl unit in the structure can be brominated or iodinated under the action of halogenated reagents (e.g. liquid bromine, iodine monomer).
IV. Preparation method
Butyl lactate can be prepared from lactic acid and n-butanol by esterification. The esterification reaction is carried out in the presence of sulfuric acid, and the finished product is obtained by neutralisation and distillation under reduced pressure at the end of the reaction. The esterification reaction can also be carried out in benzene or toluene solvent.
V. Uses
Solvent: Butyl lactate is mainly used as a polar organic solvent for the production of amine-based and nitro coatings, and also used as a high-boiling point solvent for the industrial manufacture of natural resins, synthetic resins, paints and printing inks.
Chemical raw material: It is applied as basic raw material in the production of spices, synthetic resins, adhesives and other industrial products.
Cosmetic solvent: It is also used in the processing and production of cosmetics, mainly used as the main solvent of nail polish and other cosmetics.
Edible Flavouring: Butyl lactate is the edible flavouring allowed to be used by the state, mainly used in the preparation of dairy products, cheese and creamy hard sugar type flavouring, and can also be used in the preparation of flavouring such as vanilla, mushroom, nut, coconut, coffee, and so on.
