I. Physical and Chemical Properties
Appearance: Triethylene glycol butyl ether is a colourless transparent liquid.
Melting point: about -48°C (there are also data of -47.8°C).
Boiling point: usually between 265~350°C, there are also data for 271.2°C.
Density: about 0.990g/mL at 20°C (data also available for 0.986g/mL).
Solubility: Although solubility in water is low, it is soluble in a variety of organic solvents such as ethanol and acetone. There is also information that it is readily soluble in water.
Flash point: about 156°C (there are also data of 140°C).
Stability: chemically stable, but may become unstable in the presence of strong acids, strong bases or strong oxidising agents.
II. Main Uses
Industrial field:
Used as solvent, diluent and reaction medium, it plays a key role in the production process of paints, coatings, inks, adhesives, resins and other products to improve the performance and quality of products.
Used in the manufacture of plastics, rubber, fibres and other polymer materials.
Used as metal cleaner to remove oil, paint and other dirt.
Used as a component of hydraulic oil, because it has good lubricity and oxidation resistance.
Used as printing and dyeing auxiliaries to improve the vividness and light resistance of printing and dyeing products.
Scientific research: In the laboratory, TEG-Butyl Ether is often used as a solvent or reactant for the synthesis of various compounds and the study of chemical reaction mechanisms.
Daily life: In some specific occasions, such as some cleaning products and cosmetics, triethylene glycol butyl ether may be used as a solvent or additive to improve the performance and stability of products.
Synthesis method
The synthesis of triethylene glycol butyl ether is usually achieved by the etherification reaction between ethylene glycol and butanol. This reaction is usually carried out under acidic or alkaline conditions, and an appropriate amount of catalyst is added to promote the reaction. The reaction process needs to control the temperature and reaction time, and the reaction mixture can be distilled and purified to obtain pure triethylene glycol butyl ether.
