Source: Soft stearic acid is widely found in nature, and almost all fats and oils contain varying amounts of the soft stearic acid fraction. Sapium sebiferum oil from sapium sebiferum seeds produced in China can contain more than 60 per cent of chondronic acid, palm oil contains about 40 per cent, and vegetable oil contains less than 2 per cent.

Applications
It is used as precipitant, chemical reagent and water repellent; palmitic acid is used in the manufacture of odourless chloramphenicol and various metal salts of palmitic acid, which can be used as emulsifier in emulsion polymerisation.
The sodium or potassium salt of stearic acid can be used as an emulsifier in emulsion polymerisation; the sodium salt of stearic acid is one of the main components of soap, and its aluminium and zinc salts, etc. are used in lubricants, paints, inks and plasticisers. Industrially, soft stearic acid is produced from animal and vegetable fats such as tallow, lard and palm oil by saponification and neutralisation.
Derivatives of stearic acid were used in the manufacture of napalm in the Second World War. A 45% to 55% mixture of soft stearic acid and stearic acid yields a crystalline stearic acid product that can be used in the cosmetic industry.
