Chemical Properties
Esterification: reacts with acids to form esters, e.g. esterification with benzene dicarboxylic acid to form alkyd resins.
Ester exchange reaction: ester exchange reaction with esters.
Dehydration reaction: there are two ways to dehydrate glycerol, intermolecular dehydration to get diglycerol and polyglycerol, and intramolecular dehydration to get acrolein.
Other reactions: Glycerol reacts with alkali to produce alcohols, and with aldehydes and ketones to produce acetals and ketones. In addition, glycerol can also react with hydrogen chloride to generate chlorohydrin, oxidised with dilute nitric acid to generate glyceraldehyde and dihydroxyacetone, and oxidised with periodic acid to generate formic acid and formaldehyde. Glycerol can cause combustion or explosion when it meets strong oxidants such as chromic anhydride, potassium chlorate or potassium permanganate.
Physical Properties
Hygroscopicity: Glycerol has excellent hygroscopicity due to the three hydroxyl groups in its molecular structure, which can absorb moisture from the air and gases such as hydrogen sulphide, hydrogen cyanide and sulphur dioxide.
Flammability: Glycerol is flammable and can cause combustion and explosion when it meets chromium dioxide, potassium chlorate and other strong oxidants.
Uses
Pharmaceutical field: Glycerin has antibacterial and antiviral properties and is widely used in FDA-approved wound and burn treatments. It is also used as an effective marker for measuring liver disease.
Food industry: Glycerol is non-toxic has a sweet taste, and is commonly used as a sweetener in the food industry. In addition, due to its hygroscopicity, glycerine is used as a humectant in pharmaceutical formulations.
Cosmetics: Glycerine is used in a variety of cosmetics to provide moisturisation to the skin.
Chemical industry: Glycerol is an important raw material in the chemical industry, and can be used to make nitroglycerin, epoxy resin and so on. At the same time, it can also be used to make various solvents, diluents, antifreeze and so on. In gas chromatography, glycerol is often used as a fixed liquid.
Fuel: Glycerol can be used as aircraft fuel and antifreeze for automobile fuel.
